More than an online test

Many believe that doing an online test is all that it takes to prepare for the psychometric test. However, preparing for the psychometric testing requires more than taking a test online and getting a score.

Here is what you need to look for:

  1. Is the psychometric test designed to measure work suitability?
Searching the Internet, you will find many online tests that are called psychometric tests or personality tests. However, most of these tests are not suitable for work settings. Some of the tests are designed to measure your overall personality or your IQ, identify personality disorders or learning difficulties and some are simply designed for ‘ fun’ and are not professional. Therefore, the benefit of taking these tests for the purpose of practising for the psychometric test is limited and somewhat questionable.
  2. Is the psychometric test suitable for my occupation and level?
When you are taking a practice test, it is important to ensure that the test is suitable for your occupation and organisational level (i.e. graduate, professional, manager). The aptitude tests’ (verbal, numerical and abstract) level of difficulty changes according to the occupational and organisational levels. For example, a HR graduate is expected to demonstrate higher verbal reasoning skills than those of an IT graduate. Hence, the HR graduate will get a more difficult test than that for the IT graduate. Similarly, employers look for certain personality traits in each occupational and organisational level.
  3. Do I get detailed explanations of my psychometric test results?
There is very little benefit in taking a test if you can’ t learn from your mistakes, understand how to correctly solve questions and identify the areas in which you need to improve.
  4. Who is behind this test?
Make sure that the test you are taking was developed by Psychometric test experts experienced in the field of assessment and recruiting.
  5. Does the psychometric test provider offer course guides or books so you can learn how to improve yourself?
You have taken many tests in your life, and you have prepared and practised for all of them. The psychometric test is no different. Many components in the psychometric tests are based on acquired knowledge and skills that can be improved. Learning and practising the different types of numerical reasoning questions, learning the mindsets behind the verbal reasoning questions, and recognising the transformation patterns in abstract reasoning questions gives you the edge you need.
