Metro Trains driver tests preparation 2024
As a train driver with MetroTrains, you’ll be responsible for driving passenger trains in a variety of conditions. You’ll be responsible for the safety of the entire train and passengers. As this is a job that has tremendous amount of responsibility and risk, MetroTrains conduct several types of psychometric tests and psychomotor tests to ensure candidates who apply to work as trainee train drivers have the right set of skills to become train drivers. You must pass the psychometric tests for train drivers to move to the next step of your recruitment.
The recruitment process with Metro Trains includes several steps:
Step 1: You will be asked to submit your resume.
Step 2: You will be asked to complete a psychometric assessment from home. The psychometric assessment includes the abstract reasoning test.
Step 2: You will be asked to complete a supervised assessment (assessment centre on site) which includes psychometric tests (language and literacy and numeracy tests) and a psychomotor test.
Step 3: You will be asked to participate in a panel interview, which typically includes two interviewers - one from talent management and the other is from business.
Step 5: Medical and reference checking.
Preparation for your psychometric tests with Metro Trains
Once you successfully passed the initial online interview, you will be invited to take Sydney Trains' job-related assessments, which is a supervised setting to complete a combination of Psychometric and Psychomotor tests. The standard tests are:
- Verbal test (language and literacy tests)
- Abstract reasoning test (raven's progressive test)
- Numeracy test
- Visual search exercise (this is a psychomotor assessment that measures your hand-eye coordination)
Metro Trains psychomotor assessment - visual search exercise:
The first test you will be asked to complete is the visual search exercise and this is also broken down into 3 sections for a total of 40 mins.
The first part of the visual test has a train loop full of orange dots. You have to follow your train which was a blue dot around the track. It stops at every stop in a clockwise direction. Every time there is an error such as the train skipped a stop, or the blue circle changed colours, or two trains are on the same track etc. Every time you spot an error you must click on the "'error'' button.
The 2nd part of this test has two vertical columns with 5 or 6 different shapes in each and you have to click YES for an error or NO for not an error. For example, 1, 2 or 3 shapes on each side would be shaded blue, if the exact shapes in the 2nd column were also shaded blue then that was not an error. If the shaded shapes were different then that was an error. You only have 1-1.5 seconds to answer.
The 3rd part of this test is both of the above exercises combined, so you have your train loop on the left looking for errors and you have your two columns on the right and you have to keep and eye on both sides and answer in 1-1.5 seconds.
Metro Trains verbal test (language and literacy tests)
These are timed psychometric tests which include several types of verbal test questions. The first type of questions is one that offers short passages about a specific topic or a list of instructions. After each passage or list of information, you will be given some questions about about the information or passage provided.
Let's review a verbal test example question:
Please read the following passage and answer the question at the end of the passage:
Dear Employee:
You have completed another year with the company, and you have continued to do a very good job overall. Your punctuality, professional demeanour, and attention to detail all continue to be at a very high level.
There are, however, a few aspects of your job performance that need improvement. First, as a regular daily occurrence at practices, you often fail to gather the balls and put them back on their racks in a timely enough fashion; our players want those balls back on the racks as soon as possible so that they can continue practicing without delays and without losing their rhythm. Second, water needs to be available to any player at any time and, occasionally, you have been slow to get water to the players as soon as they come off the court. Be sure to have the water ready for a player as soon as it is needed. Finally, you should always be available to immediately retrieve balls that bounce away from the court. Recently, after one player shot an air-ball, you didn’t retrieve the ball until after free-throw shooting drills had begun. Please make a point to retrieve balls as quickly as possible.
Question:
The employee has done a great job in the past year in terms of making water available.
Based on the passage, is this statement:
True
False
or Can't say?
To answer this question, we need to read the passage. The report’s second point states that the employee needs to do a better job in water availability. Therefore, the correct answer is 'False'.
Let's review a different language and literacy test example question:
Cane : walk, as eyeglasses ?
A. taste
B. hear
C. colour
D. run
E. observe
F. sun
This question measures your ability to understand the English language and the use of English words. The question offers you a pair of words that have a specific association between them. In thus case, ‘cane’ and ‘walk’ is that the cane is an ancillary instrument to assist someone to walk. Therefore, we need to find a word in the list with a similar association to ‘eyeglasses’. ‘Eyeglasses’ are an ancillary instrument to help someone ‘observe’, so this forms the same relationship as exists between ‘cane’ and ‘walk’.
Metro Trains abstract reasoning test
Metro Trains uses an abstract reasoning test to measure your problem-solving skills, your ability to make decisions with partial information and your strategic thinking. The abstract reasoning test for Metro Trains typically includes a series of test questions that you need to complete under time constraints. All Abstract test questions are non-verbal problems, which means that there is no text to read. There are several types of abstract test questions used in Matro's test. Thus first type is one that offers a 3 by 3 matrix of shapes that have some common patterns or rules going from left to right or going from top to bottom. Another type of abstract test questions has a list of shapes going from left to right on a horizontal line. Your task is to quickly identify the patterns (which are repetitions) and logical rules for each group of shapes and then use them to select the correct answer. Each Abstract test question in the Cognitive test has a different group of shapes and different patterns and logical rules.
Let's review the following simple example abstract test question. In this question there are 8 shapes in a 3 by 3 table. The 9th shape is missing and your task is to find what it is based on the other shapes.
To solve this question, we need to find the logical rules that apply to the shapes going from left to right or top to bottom. We can see that in each cell in each row contains a black rectangle or box. The last cell in each row is a combination of the first two boxes of the first and second cells. So, if we look at our top row, the first two black boxes in first and middle cells are combined in the last cell to create a vertical black rectangle. Therefore, the missing shape is a full black box which is a combination of the two horizontal black rectangles.
Metro Trains interview
The panel interview is also conducted online. You will be asked questions by two interviewers - one from talent management and one from business. It can takes up to 30 min and typically includes between 4 - 5 questions. It is very important that you use the STAR structure to answer your questions. Be carful as every word you say will be analysed against what they are looking to find.
